Future Development

During the last few years, the Port of Ravenna Authority has invested € 220 million to put into practice the development master plan of the Port of Ravenna, which includes the dredging and deepening of the canal bed to -11.5 m, the building of new quays measuring an additional 5 km overall, the widening of the port canal, new port protection walls and a new lighting system improving nocturnal navigation, as well as works in process totalling a further € 180 million.

Further dredging and deepening of the canal bed to -11.5 m allows access for ships with a draft of up to 35 ft and safer navigation in the dark.

Moreover, the project and procedures for dredging the canal bed to -14.5 m have already begun to accommodate vessels with a draft of up to 44 ft, such as bulk carriers with a load capacity of over 50,000 tons and container carriers with a capacity of over 45,000 TEUs.
